At Schweppes Australia, we acknowledge the strong link between our raw materials and the environment from which they are sourced. We recognise we’re a significant user of resources and we have a responsibility to use them wisely.
Our impacts on the environment are managed through an environmental management system (EMS) and we have committed to achieving ISO14001 certification across our business. So far, four out of our seven major manufacturing sites have achieved certification.
Our Environment Policy sets out our company commitments and strategies. We have established plans in place to improve environmental performance in each of the areas identified in our policy. Our programs are audited by internal and external auditors to ensure we comply with legal requirements and company procedures and standards. |
Here are some of the initiatives we already have completed or have in place:
Water conservation
Waterless lubrication systems installed on production lines at our sites, saving tens of millions of litres each year. Our Tullamarine site received funding through the Smart Water Fund to assist in implementing this system.
A large-scale rain water harvesting system was installed at our Tullamarine site in 2008 to supply cooling towers, toilets and gardens with rain water. Estimated water savings are 7.5 million litres of potable water per year.
Water efficient appliances such as low-flow taps, trigger sprays, showerheads and urinals have been installed. * Education programs to help save water at work and at home have been delivered to our employees.
Greenhouse and energy initiatives
Refrigeration systems at a number of our sites have been upgraded to improve efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
A 100 kilowatt roof-mounted solar panel system was installed at our Huntingwood site to supply electricity. This generates enough electricity every year to power 21 homes, saving 140 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
Waste reduction
We have waste management programs in place at all sites, focused on the Reduce > Reuse > Recycle hierarchy.
We undertake regular waste audits to identify opportunities for improvement.
Packaging
We are a signatory to the Australian Packaging Covenant and complete action plans and annual reports detailing our commitments and progress. Click

We’re working to reduce the weight of our bottles as well as to decrease our non-recyclable packaging, reduce the amount of packaging we use and increase the recycled content of our bottles and cans.
We were first to market in Australia with hot-fill PET bottles that use post consumer recycled material.
Schweppes Australia is actively involved in the beverage industry’s Packaging Stewardship Forum (a forum of the AFGC) which promotes post-consumer recycling and litter prevention projects, in partnership with government, industry and the community.
Our stance on genetically engineered ingredients
Schweppes Australia does not source ingredients which contain genetically engineered (GE) organisms. We actively seek to purchase ingredients for manufacturing purposes which are not derived from GE crops.
As part of our vendor assurance program, supplier declarations indicating GE status are required for each ingredient. Where necessary, alternative ingredients are sourced to eliminate any risk of using GE ingredients.
