Making beverages

1_1_1_header_who_beverages.jpg A big part of the Schweppes Australia business is carbonated soft drinks. The range includes mineral water, lemonade, colas, other flavoured soft drinks and mixers.

The key ingredients are:

1. Water
Our soft drink products contain at least 86% purified water. Some, such as natural mineral water and plain sodas, are almost entirely water.

2. Sweeteners
To provide sweetness and taste to our products, we add a range of sugars or sweeteners to many of our products. We also have a large range of diet and sugar free products for those who prefer their beverages without calories.

3. Flavours
In many cases we add flavours to our soft drinks to create the exciting, delicious range of beverages we’re known for. Flavours can be derived from a number of ingredients in special combinations.

4. Preservatives
Preservatives are added to prevent products from spoiling.

5. Carbon dioxide

Carbon dioxide (CO²) is what puts the bubbles in soft drink and makes the drink refreshing. To do this, we use a process called carbonation where the drink is chilled and CO² is added under high pressure. This allows the CO² to be absorbed so that when you open the bottle, you experience the magic of Schweppervesence!

6. Colours
To enhance the appeal of our soft drinks we sometimes colour our product.

7. More detail
If you want to understand more about the ingredients in your favourite product, the product labels provide more detail.

Putting it all together...

Part 1:
The soft drink syrup is prepared by combining ingredients with water to form a syrup. The syrup is blended with treated water, which has had the air removed to enable better carbonation. This is then chilled and passed through a carbonator where carbon dioxide is added.

Part 2:
Our soft drinks are sold in a variety of package types and sizes. Containers are delivered to our factories on pallets, and they are cleaned thoroughly before filling.

Part 3:
Bottles are filled on a rotary filler at speeds which vary from 100 to 1200 bottles per minute. Immediately after filling, the bottles are capped, washed, blown dry, labelled, packed into cartons and warehoused. They are then dispatched in the order that they are produced, in line with customer orders.
